Cloud Costs Are Out of Control. Here Is the Fix.

When a client tells us their cloud bill is out of control, they almost always assume the fix will involve some clever new architecture. It almost never does. It usually involves turning things off that nobody remembered were still running, and sizing the things that are still needed to match reality instead of a guess made under deadline pressure two years ago.

The usual suspects

Orphaned storage volumes from decommissioned services. Non production environments running around the clock instead of business hours. Data transfer costs nobody accounted for because the architecture diagram did not show which resources lived in different regions. Reserved capacity purchased for a growth curve that did not materialize on schedule. None of these require new engineering. They require someone to actually look.

The fix is a habit, not a project

A one time cost audit helps, but the bill creeps back up within a year if nobody owns it continuously. We set clients up with cost alerts tied to specific resources, a monthly review that takes thirty minutes, and tagging discipline enforced by tooling rather than good intentions, so the next spike gets caught in week one, not in the annual budget review.

Cost control is not a redesign. It is a habit someone has to actually own.

The clients who keep their cloud spend under control long term are not the ones who did one impressive optimization sprint. They are the ones who made looking at the bill a boring, recurring habit instead of an annual emergency.
